All-State Dental Assisting Student Awarded National Scholarship

BALTIMORE – (June 07, 2011) – Katrina Myers, a dental assisting student at All-State Career Baltimore's Allied Healthcare division, was awarded a $1,000 scholarship by the American Dental Association (ADA). The ADA Foundation awards scholarships annually to dental students, dental hygiene students and dental assisting students who attend CODA accredited schools. The selection criterion included academics, attendance, attitude and an essay developed by the applicant. Each school nominates one student; the foundation then selects the winners from a national pool of applicants.

Katrina always had an interest in the dental field but never pursued it. At age 37, after a conversation with a coworker at the Under Armour Distribution Center where she has been employed for nine years, she enrolled at All-State and is currently completing the ninth month of this eleven month program.

"There were many students who had solid credentials but Katrina was a unanimous choice because of the focus she maintains in spite of her overwhelming outside responsibilities," explained Dental Chair Robin Caplan. "Katrina is a single mom of a child with severe disabilities yet rarely misses school or work. That type of dedication deserves to be rewarded."

Katrina's 13 year old daughter Cheyenne has Rett Syndrome, a neurological and developmental disorder that is a form of autism. She had a 20-word vocabulary but no longer speaks and cannot feed, dress or bathe herself. Katrina works all day and goes to school at night; currently she lives with her parents, who provide childcare while Katrina is in school.

"I was honored to have been approached by Ms. Caplan but I had no expectation of winning a national scholarship," explained Katrina. "I have worked hard my whole life and this scholarship is a sign of the good things to come."
